The LWV has long advocated for sensible gun control measures, with established gun violence positions at the national, state, and Cook County levels. Locally, the League of Women Voters of Park Ridge launched pivotal community engagement and education efforts around gun safety in the 1990s. See below for news clippings and images from this period in our local League's history!
In September of 1993, the LWVPR joined forces with the Morton-Grove-Niles chapter to host a forum
The Gun Violence Prevention forum was attended by over 70 community members
Panelists included non-profit directors, an Illinois State Senator, and the Clerk of Cook County Circuit Court
Mr. Thomas VandenBerk discussed the financial costs of gun violence and spoke of personal loss.
The LWVPR issued a specific request to the City in November of 1993 to adopt gun control ordinances. Joan Ebner, President of the LWVPR, spoke at Council on behalf of the League.
In June of 1994, the issue heated up again at public forums hosted by the LWVPR
